In 2012, the SLPA recognized an additional need for public access and purchased a dock for the Pumphouse location on the south shore. The SLPA continues to fund the installation, removal, storage, repair and insurance on this public access dock.
As the renovation of the Mini-Wakan State Park Lodge was nearing completion, it was determined that a new dock would be an asset to the lodge and a good addition to the park. In 2013, the SLPA purchased and, subsequently, donated a dock to DNR who continues to install and remove the dock at Mini-Wakan State Park.
Winter Access to Big Spirit Lake is important to anglers and sports enthusiasts. The SLPA recognizes that public and private resources must be used to create and enhance access. The SLPA donates money to and coordinates with Kabele’s Trading Post and Lodge to plow available parking lots and break down ice heaves for winter access to the lake.
Future Plans
The SLPA continues to plan for funding docks. As part of the annual Walleye Weekend event, the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce donates a portion of the weekend proceeds to the various lake associations. The SLPA has chosen to earmark these proceeds for fisherman access. The SLPA is currently working with DNR and the Dickinson County Conservation Board on a new dock and renovation of the boat ramp at the Spillway on the south shore of Big Spirit Lake in Ainsworth-Orleans Park. In addition, we continue to work on winter access issues.
